Watercolor Paper Leaves in Folded Frames – Assembly Tutorial

I wanted a really unique & beautiful project for this fall. The paper cut leaves with the watercolor texture on them works so well! You can change it up by using different colors of paper, or paint. Size the leaves up or down for more variance as well. It’s such a fun project!

What you’ll need:

  • 3 sheets 12×12 white cardstock
  • 1 sheet 12×12 yellow cardstock
  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Adhesive
  • Watercolor Paper Leaves in Folded Frames cut file found in the Silhouette Design Store

How to Assemble:

Start by sizing your cutfiles in Silhouette Studio. You want the leaves to be able to fit in the frames. Arrange the cut files so you’ll get two frames per 12×12 white sheet of paper, and the leaf stem designs cut out of the white as well. I made 6 of these, but I think a larger number would look amazing on a wall! The watercolor textures really make the individual leaves unique. Decide how many you want to create.

Assemble the frames by folding up on all of the score lines. Fold the opposite sides with slanted edges upwards and around. You’ll see the angles on the sides. On the sides with the straight edges, starting with one side, fold those upwards and around again. Tuck this side into the two angled sides. Repeat on the other side & push the edges together to make the frame square. Repeat for all of the frames!

Cut your leaves out of a yellow cardstock. I chose a textured one. Using watercolors, paint orange and red on each leaf. Let the colors bleed together for a cool effect. Paint the delicate stems, that you cut out of the white cardstock, with yellow. Let dry.

Using a strong adhesive, adhere the delicate stems to the painted leaves. Let dry.

Get all of your assembled leaves ready, as well as your assembled frames.

We want to give the leaves a more 3D & organic effect. Bend the leaves gently in half vertically. Curl the edges of the leaves on your fingers, and bend edges to get the look you want.

Once all of the leaves look more 3D and organic, we want to glue them to the assembled frames. I used a stronger adhesive, but you could easily use glue dots or something similar.

Here’s the finished watercolor paper leaf in a paper folded frame! Repeat the gluing process for the rest of the frames & leaves.

I displayed mine on a wall, above my bookshelf, but there are so many ways to use these! They could make a really unique table placecard with a print & cut banner placed on each.
